Dorian's Movie Reviews

Is it worth seeing? Reviews are presented with no cynicism, no comparisons, no biased standards, no pretentiousness - every movie is reviewed on its individual entertainment value including technical presentation.

I give this one three spotlights out of a possible five for the writing, acting, directing, and the casting. It carries a PG rating. Enjoy!

Scale:

  • 5 Spotlights: The best of movie making, well worth seeing
  • 4 Spotlights: Good movie for the genre; may have minor technical or story problems but they hardly harm the enjoyment; clearly worth seeing; (most movies)
  • 3 Spotlights: Not bad, but has problems - worth seeing
  • 2 Spotlights: Caution - a "B" movie, probably will appeal only to some
  • 1 Spotlight: Caution - not recommended for any audience (will probably never be given)

Note: No half spotlights are given.

Personal Entertainment Scale

What is "entertainment?" Everyone has a different reaction to things, what is entertaining is nearly impossible to define. What I will try to make evolve here is a system and scale that capture the essence of what is entertaining. The audience should have the privilege of deciding in advance how it wants to feel, and find movies accordingly.

The most noteworthy aspect of entertainment to me is, "How do I feel when I leave the theater." Some movies make you sad at some loss, others angry at injustice, others happy that there is a statisfying resolution that works out well for everyone, some challenged, some are a thrill-ride that leave you exhilarated, some leave you uplifted, some romantic, and some probe the darkness and leave you unsettled. All of these things are OK. So first I will begin to look at how I felt when I left the theater, and Second, did the ending have a statisfying resolution. Usually feelings will be mixed.

How did the movie make me feel:

Happy 1 - 5

good, happy, ecstatic, joyful, confident, strong, loved, capable, masterful, exuberant, euphoric, thrilled, excited, inspired,

Satisfied 1 - 5

Pleased 1 - 5

Confident 1 - 5

Calm, at peace 1 - 5

My reviews are not based much on my personal taste, or any standard besides entertainment value. I try to be as objective as possible, keeping in mind that entertainment value is very subjective and individualized. If I'm not interested in a movie I usually don't go see it, so it doesn't get reviewed. Each character, and each position in the production company might be highlighted if the contribution affected the enjoyment of the story as either outstanding or dismal and I noticed it, keeping in mind that many contributions are singularly distinguished by their seamless integration with the story, not calling attention to themselves and thereby escaping attention.
